BASF representatives recently addressed a global policy conference in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Constituency for Africa (CFA), a U.S.-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to mobilize and foster increased cooperation and coordination among a broad based coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to the progress and empowerment of Africa and the African people.
BASF Global Agricultural Products has been a key sponsor of CFA for the past two years, and BASF's participation in the 2004 panel discussion, “Strategies for Improving Agricultural Production and Entrepreneurship for Food, Security and Wealth Creation in Africa,” was the direct result of the ongoing dialogue between BASF and CFA.
One of the topics discussed was a BASF technology that can improve maize production by controlling a damaging parasite called Striga. The BASF herbicide program has enabled farmers to triple their maize yields, according to field trials in Kenya. Other discussions centered on BASF's insecticide programs for vector-borne disease control and eradication.
The BASF representatives also congratulated the Hon. Delano Lewis, former U.S. ambassador to South Africa, on his recent appointment as Chairman of CFA.
“We are proud to support the work of CFA,” said Dr. John H. Thomas, BASF Global Marketing Manager for Public Health Products. “CFA continues to be a vital force in coordinating and focusing efforts to advance humanitarian and economic progress within the African nation and around the world.”
