Facing the World’s Public Health Challenges

Infectious disease is one of the biggest barriers to development and prosperity in the developing world. These diseases kill more than 13 million people a year. And the fact that over half of the victims are children under the age of five only ensures that future generations will continue to be disadvantaged.

BASF understands that these diseases are largely preventable. And we’re committed to taking an active role in their control and eradication. Through our global partnerships, our products are used to control malaria, dengue fever, Guinea worm disease and yellow fever in Africa and many other regions where these disease are endemic.

In addition to these infectious diseases, another significant barrier to development and prosperity is food security. The problem of hunger in Africa is widespread and getting worse. Improved agricultural technology is needed among poor, smallholder farmers to break the cycle of poverty and malnutrition.


Public Health Challenges
Malaria threatens 2 billion people worldwide with an estimated 500 million new cases every year. Moreover, it costs Africa alone an estimated $12 billion in lost GDP. BASF helps developing countries control Malaria and other health challenges, including:
